About the Photographs:

"Outskirts of Utopia"

This is a series of digital photographs exploring the non-ordinary presence of what often appears as ordinary. Taken throughout 2005-2007 in and around the Brandywine Valley of Delaware and Pennsylvania, these photos attempt to capture the overlooked mysticism inherent in daily life. Photography helps me explain and cope with the world. It's more interesting documenting a field of sunflowers as a grove of sentient beings struggling with their own mortality as winter approaches than regarding them as inanimate objects. To quote photographer Kenneth Jones, "Where is the truth in this garden of memory?"

"Alchemy of Form"

This was my first photography show back in May of 2003.  The series explores some of the Jungian ideas of Mandala forms although I hadn’t read anything about Carl Jung until after I had made the images, so who knows what these are really about.  I do know that they have something to do with my love for the local landscape and the walking of my dog therein.

This show also exhibited the paintings of local artist and friend Henry Long who is a source of inspiration and support to me and other local artists.  (www.henrylong.com)

"Sanctuary and Sentinels"

This collection of photographs is a continuation of the Alchemy of Form series, which began as a study of possibilities of form and structure in nature.  Some of the photos use symmetry to explore combining Euclidean and fractal geometries or the geometry of man merged with the geometry of nature.  The Sanctuary and Sentinels series expands upon this idea be creating spaces that may exist or have existed in time that are in some way sacred.  The entry to a sacred space may be marked in some way with symbols, may have some form of portal or may be guarded or kept sacred by a caretaker or Sentinel.

"Shanghai Bus"

This series was taken on the last day of a business trip to Shanghai China.  I had about 2 hours to kill before I needed to leave for the airport to return home.  I sat on a wall in front of my hotel at a busy intersection thinking about where I wanted to go to take pictures.  After a few minutes I realized already where I needed to be.  All the photos are of different buses that passed by filled with morning commuters.  This series has never been exhibited outside of this website and I would love to show them.  Please contact me if your gallery is interested.
